Our chickens live in a purpose built run in our garden.  We built this around several trees because chickens were originally jungle creatures and we felt that this area would be more natural for them.  They have a choice of shady and sunny areas.  We supplement their food with treats from the garden and they also eat up any slugs we give them.  They give us the most fabulous eggs with deep golden yolks and thick shells which you just cannot buy in the shops.

MRS CLUCKY

Mrs Clucky is technically a Blue even though she is grey coloured.  She has lovely grey legs as well.  She is not the most prolific egg layer and has had several health scares but she is a real trooper and keeps on going but at her own pace.  Apparently she is now an international star and has fans in New Zealand!

LEGGIE AND WHITIE

Leggie and Whitie are White Leghorns and are our most reliable egg layers.  They lay white eggs and reliably produce and egg a day each.  They are small but really good value.

BLACK TAIL AND GINGER RODGERS

These two are also reliable egg layers.  Ginger Rodgers on LHS likes tap dancing on an upturned plastic tray and Blacktail mugs you gently for treats.

ROCKY

Rocky is a Black Rock, a widely used hybrid and a reliable egg layer.

We will soon be adding 20 more layers which will free range in the field.
